Our History
Dedication and commitment have always been characteristic of those involved with the ministries of First Assembly of God. These traits were apparent from the beginning of First Assembly in 1947. Rev. & Mrs. J.F. Jett founded First Assembly with the families of Mr. & Mrs. Augustine Rodrigue, Mr. & Mrs. Abel Gros, Mr. & Mrs. Willard Rodrigue, Mrs. Jules Born, and Mr. & Mrs. Nelvin Dufrene. They built a tabernacle on St. George Road in Schriever and began worshipping in their new facility with sawdust floors. In 1949 the tabernacle was moved to Thibodaux on the corner of Lawrence and Caroline Streets. In 1950, a new church building was erected and the tabernacle was sold.
The church was officially organized during Rev. Jett's pastorate. In February, 1957, Rev. Jett resigned and Rev. J.W. Stafford became pastor. Due to illness, Rev. Stafford resigned in November, 1957 and Rev. J.B. Cherry became the interim pastor until Rev. H.E. Moss came to pastor the church until November, 1959.
The church continued to progress and Rev. Andrew Martin became pastor in December, 1959 until April, 1964. In 1962, a parsonage was built behind the church building on Caroline Street. Rev. Earl Carlisle pastored the church May, 1964 until May, 1966.
In the summer of 1966, Rev. William Blair was elected pastor, and property on Tiger Drive was soon donated. The first phase of a new building was completed. The parsonage was moved from Caroline Street to the Tiger Drive location. The main sanctuary was dedicated on April 26, 1971. Rev. Blair resigned in January, 1978.
February of 1978, Rev. & Mrs. Walter Rose were welcomed as pastors of First Assembly. An overflow was added to the main sanctuary in 1980 to provide additional seating to the growing congregation. The Roses found a home, and the parsonage was remodeled for additional educational space.
In 1983, the church began exploring the possibilities of purchasing property for a relocation of the facilities. The property at 150 Julia Road was purchased and a building program was launched in June of 1986. Much energy went into the construction of the new facilities and culminated in the joyful celebration of the first services held on January 3, 1988. Since then, a Day Care and Pre-School has begun. The work of the church is continuing to expand.
With great joy on May 16, 1999, we dedicated the new 12,000 square foot multi-purpose building next door, to the work, service, and glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is our prayer that every person entering the doors will find Christ real in their lives. In August of 2001, we purchased an additional five acres of land for future expansion. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
